Revenue through Bio-Power

The sugar mills as well as the distillery are the important sources of energy, which can be converted into electricity. This is an outstanding way of adding value to by-products, resulting in increased revenue for the sugar units.

Sugarcane bagasse is used to generate high pressure steam, which is utilised to generate electricity and resultant exhaust steam is utilized for manufacturing sugar.

Similarly bio-gas produced while handling waste management in alcohol manufacturing is utilized for producing steam required for power generation and manufacturing process.

The world-class bagasse based co-generation system

Bagasse, the fibrous portion of sugarcane, is burned in power plants onsite to co-generate heat and electricity which can be utilised for captive consumption by the sugar manufacturing facility as well as for sale to State utility company and other companies. Currently, the Company's facilities at Simbhaoli and Chilwaria house co-generation plants that convert 0.05 MMT of bagasse into 58 MW/hr of electricity, of which 34 MW/hr is surplus.

The surplus will go up to 34 MW/ hr by the beginning of 2008-09 sugar season. SSL is eligible for Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) benefits for power plants, and has received approval for its Simbhaoli bio power plant in this respect. The expanded operations in sugar businesses shall provide additional surplus bagasse which will allow sugar refining and bio-power generation for major part of year.
