The sugar mills as well as the distillery are the important sources of energy, which can be converted into electricity. This is an outstanding way of adding value to by-products, resulting in increased revenue for the sugar operations.
Sugarcane bagasse is used to generate steam, which is used to generate electricity in back pressure mode and resultant exhaust steam is utilized for processing sugar.
Similarly, bio-gas-a by-product in waste management system in alcohol manufacturing is utilized for generating steam required for process.
The world-class bagasse based co-generation system
At present, 18 MW/hr of power is being co-generated in the existing sugar plants. A major part of it consumed in house. SSL is now planning to increase the surplus power to 39 Mw/ hour and extending the generation cycle to approx 240 days (including 60 days in off season). It has executed power purchase agreements with the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) to export power to the grid.
The cogen project is being setup in support with CDM.
