Indian sugar production is cyclic in nature and has always acted as an influential swing factor in World sugar demand and supply conditions. Based upon company's own assessment, over the period of next ten years, India's sugar production is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 1.5% and consumption at a rate of 4 to 6% p.a. This assumption is based upon a population growth of 1.5% p.a; increase in per capita disposable income by 6% p.a; consistent switching from alternate sweeteners to sugar , shift in the income levels of the people and increased urbanisation. Planning Commission has visualised a growth of 6% p.a. for 11th Plan period (2007-2012). During this time span India will have its share of surplus and deficit sugar years and in order to maintain the balance between the demand & supply of sugar and their prices. It is of utmost importance to export/import and trade/hedge in the domestic as well as the International markets.
